Connecting the Dots: Why BC's Homeless are Dying

The City of Vancouver has four winter shelters this year, and 17 year-round shelters to protect people from the elements. Yet the deaths of 57 homeless people were reportes in Metro Vancouver from 2007-2010, and likely more weren't counted. In Megaphone Issue 122 we examine why people living without proper shelter in the city are more susceptible to preventable deaths, and what needs to be done to save their lives.

Also in this issue: The Vancouver Urban Core Community Workers Association (VUCCWA) pitches a low-income solution to people accessing shelters by transit; housing and multicultural groups in North Vancouver report an increase in Iranian people becoming homeless; Trish Garner of the BC Poverty Reduction Coalition says government's "Jobs Plan" is not a poverty reduction plan; W2 hangs in limbo as their Woodwards eviction deadline draws closer; Megaphone vendor Sid Bristow talks about how he transitioned from a childhood in Little Ford, to selling Megaphone in Vancouver; arts listings, horoscopes, poetry from our writing workshops, and more!
