Seeking Winter Refuge: Homeless shelters face uncertain future

Vancouver’s signature mix of rain and sleet is back again, and despite the fact that the number of homeless people in the city remains the same, there will be fewer options for them to get indoors this winter.

Although Mayor Gregor Robertson has been calling for them, the province has decided not to re-open four cold-weather shelters, giving the city 160 fewer shelter beds. With provincial funding for the other low-barrier shelters still tenuous, homeless advocates worry that this winter could be one of the worse yet.
