Megaphone (est. 2007) is committed to reshaping societal perceptions of poverty and creating opportunities for those with barriers to the larger community to participate in self-determined creative self-expression and meaningful work.
At our heart, the Vendor Program addresses the lack of accessible income earning opportunities for people with barriers to traditional employment. We do this by producing literary and journalistic publications and training 125+ people experiencing poverty in Vancouver to sell those products for an income.
Our publications, the means by which they are created and sold, foster community engagement, awareness, and support for people experiencing poverty and social isolation.
Megaphone Magazine
Monthly Megaphone magazine is led by a peer newsroom (journalists with lived or living experience of poverty in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside) and features important community journalism and local arts and culture.
Voices of the Street
Limited editionVoices of the Street anthology features poetry and prose written by people experiencing poverty who participate in our Vendor Program or community writing workshops, including Onsite Detox and Transitional Housing. On sale starting May 3, 2024.
Hope in Shadows Calendar
Annual Hope in Shadows calendar is produced by engaging approximately 150 Downtown Eastside residents in a photography contest to capture moments of hope and resolve in the face of poverty. On sale now!
