Celebrating the voices of a community, today Megaphone releases its second anthology of writing from residents of the city’s Downtown Eastside, called Voices of the Street.
The Voices of the Street anthology collects some of the best pieces from Megaphone's writing workshops, featuring poetry and prose describing the writers’ experiences with homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, and sex work.
Megaphone’s community writing workshop project began in 2009 at Onsite, the treatment centre above Vancouver’s safe-injection site, as a way to help people use writing as a tool in their recovery and get their stories published in the magazine.
Voices of the Street is sold on the streets by Megaphone vendors, who purchase each copy for $2.50 and sell it for $5. All proceeds from sales of the issue go directly to the vendor.
Join Megaphone this Thursday, April 19th at the Waldorf to launch the Voices of the Street anthology!
